A simple but elegant set of counters and a spinner. Designed to explore numbers 1 – 6.
The double sided spinner is an excellent tool to begin fine motor manipulation and co-ordination. It has 1 – 6 printed numerals on one side, and on the reverse are dot patterns corresponding with those numerals. The dots can be felt and counted by touch and are also fun to use when ‘subitising’.
The oval counters represent numerals as holes, able to be felt from both sides. The dot patterns, (present on both the spinner and the counters) have been configured in such a way as to copy the ‘triangle positioning’ of eyes and mouth. This is an in-built pattern recognition, which babies first use to identify their parents’ faces. This ‘triangular’ configuration helps children to identify numerical ‘patterns’ quickly through visual subitising. An example of this can be seen when looking at groups of dots to identify quantities. These patterns of ones, twos and threes, can also help children to break down larger quantities into smaller groups. Through subitising, they can visualise the repeating patterns of smaller amounts, and progress to identifying larger numbers (here to six).
Using this set also makes it easier for learners to recognise the components of numbers and to accurately assess quantities and number bonds.
The oval dot counters are compatible with a larger ‘Oval Counters’ range, which uses a ‘cam lock’
system. This feature is designed to work seamlessly with several of the boards, adding to the whole learning experience.
